Review New FEMA Floodplain Maps

FEMA is in the process of issuing preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and a Flood Insurance Study (FIS) for review in Bucks County. These maps and studies propose changes to the current flood zones, which determine who must buy flood insurance. This mapping update may change the flood risk status of individual properties.

To improve accuracy, the redrawn maps use a new digital base map and incorporate the new Delaware River floodplain study. New surveyed river cross-sections, LiDAR information and updated hydrology have been incorporated into updated hydraulic modeling that has been used to prepare the new floodplain mapping. A Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map compatible with GIS is being produced and Bucks County plans to make the maps available to the public electronically for the first time. More accurate, digitally available maps will make it easier for local officials to plan for and protect people and property from flooding.

To find out what else has changed, as well as information on the appeal and protest processes, download FEMA’s Flood Hazard Mapping Fact Sheet.

The preliminary maps are available for review at the Lower Makefield Township Municipal Building Monday-Friday 8:00-4:00 pm, or can be viewed on-line at: http://www.rampp-team.com/pa.htm

An update on the FEMA Map Modernization was presented at the May 4, 2011 Board of Supervisors meeting and can be viewed on the Township Cable Channel, or you can view it online. A Community Meeting held in Upper Makefield Township with FEMA and the Bucks County Planning Commission on April 27th can also be viewed online.
