Sewer bill message
Your sewer bill is calculated from your water bill. The water usage, measured in thousands of gallons, is sent to Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority who then takes that water usage and creates the sewer bill.
As far back as the Township can find there are periods when the Water Company readings only show 2 months worth of usage in what is transmitted to Bucks County Water and Sewer. For those households you will see a lower sewer bill, when that happens, because it only reflects 2 months of water usage. Because these bills are quarterly, eventually a sewer bill will be reflective of 4 months of water usage to make up for the shortfall in the previous bill. Most typically it would be the very next sewer bill that has that extra month of usage in it.
Our March, 2020 bill did have a significant increase in it, on average 37%. Many households have reached out to the Township indicating their increase was much higher. I have asked for a review of accounts to determine, how many of these bills fell under this category of having this 4th month in this bill. The answer is approximately 2,000 households.
That extra month did indeed make this bill much higher. While the extra month is still due because a previous bill would have only had 2 months included or billed, we have worked to provide a credit for ratepayers that had this fourth month in our March bill. That extra month would have been billed at a higher rate, because of the increase, than it otherwise would have been.
The average household uses approximately 5,000 gallons of water a month. Under the increased rate in the March, 2020 bill those 5,000 gallons would be billed at approximately $4.60 per thousand while the old rate was $3.36 per thousand. The additional cost of $1.24 per thousand, for that month, would have been $6.20. The Township has authorized a $10.00 credit, for each of these affected households, that will appear on your next billing statement. That is equivalent to approximately 8,000 gallons of water usage. While everyone’s water usage will vary, our hope is to give enough credit back to more than cover the additional charge on that one month of usage.
BCWSA is applying that credit to those accounts over the next day or so.
