DISABLED PERSONS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES

TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2007

 

A meeting of the Disabled Persons Advisory Board of the Township of Lower Makefield was held in the Municipal Building on Tuesday, January 23, 2007.  Secretary Huchler-Smith opened the meeting at 7:30 p.m.

APPROVAL OF OCTOBER 2006 MINUTES

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith moved and Ms. Dorko seconded and it was unanimously carried to approve the October 2006 minutes as written.

 

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

 

The Board postponed the election of officers for 2007 until the next meeting.

 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH FOR 2007

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated the Disabled Persons Board attendance at Community Day was great exposure for the Board to show what it can do for the community.  She stated that she does not know the new date for Community Day 2007 or the Senior Expo day, but would like the Board to have a presence at both of those again.  Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated that she wondered if it is worthwhile for the Board to have a presence at Harvest Day.

 

The Board discussed placing the Disabled Persons Board pamphlets in other public buildings within the Township such as the library.

 

HANDICAP PARKING SIGN LETTER

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated that some places are still not in compliance with the proper handicap parking signage requirements and she would continue to follow-up.

 

BUILDING PERMITS

 

There are no new permits to report.

TOWNSHIP ORDINANCE COMMITTEE – Megan Dorko

 

Ms. Dorko stated that she could not attend the last meeting, but followed up with a letter noting the ADA should be referred to in certain situations in the Township ordinance.  She stated the Ordinance Committee will have one other meeting then will present its suggestions to the Board of Supervisors of changes to the Township ordinances.

 

PRESENTATION TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated that members of the Disabled Persons Board updated the Board of Supervisors as to the progress it made with the Board’s web-site, brochure, Township properties meeting handicap parking requirements, review of building permits, installation of the audible traffic signal and they talked about the Disabled Persons Board goals for the future.

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated that the Board of Supervisors was also presented with a plaque to the Township in recognition for the Disabled Persons Board accomplishments.

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated the Fire and Police Department were present at the Board of Supervisors meeting and they talked about updating the emergency database.

 

FIRE/POLICE

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith suggested having a representative from the Fire or Police Department attend a Disabled Persons Board meeting to discuss getting the emergency database up and running.

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith asked the Board how we can get the Police to enforce handicap parking violations within the Township.  Mr. Stainthorpe suggested Mrs. Huchler-Smith or Mr. Rogers contact Chief Coluzzi to discuss enforcement.

 

Mrs. Piccinotti stated she noticed a fire hydrant sign over a fire hydrant in Falls Township and thought that was a good idea.  Mr. Stainthorpe stated that is probably for the Public Works Department for snow plowing.

 

PRESENTATION BY TOM WELLS

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated Mr. Wells, a local builder who is deaf in one ear would like to talk with the Disabled Persons Board about better sound material for the walls of the Board of Supervisors meeting room.  She stated that he would probably talk with the Board at its February meeting.

are review of building plans, address citizens concerned, community outreach and proper handicap parking signage.

 

TOWNSHIP ACCESSIBILITY

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith stated the doors and lighting at the Township Tax Office need to be improved for handicap accessibility as well as the doors at the library.  She stated she would contact the Tax Collector and the library about those issues.

 

TRANSPORTATION

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith asked if there is anything the Board could accomplish or act as a liaison between the Township and the TMA.  Ms. Dorko suggested working with other advisory boards to work with the TMA.  Mr. Stainthorpe stated the Bucks County TMA has a disabled board to address transportation issues countrywide.  Mrs. Huchler-Smith asked if the TMA disabled board has an e-mail address or web-site she could visit to review meeting minutes.  Mr. Stainthorpe stated he would get Mrs. Huchler-Smith the TMA information.

 

Mrs. Huchler-Smith suggested putting information on the Disabled Persons Board about taxi services or Bucks County Transportation to assist people with information about how to get places.  She also suggested getting other municipalities such as Yardley Borough interested in having a Disabled Persons Board and asked who she could contact.  Mr. Stainthorpe suggested contacting Joe Hunter in Yardley to ask him to address the Yardley Council about this idea.  Mr. Stainthorpe also suggested contacting Falls Township.  Mrs. Huchler-Smith also suggested attending a Southeastern Bucks League of Municipalities meeting.

 

The date of the next meeting will be held February 27th at 7:30 p.m.

 

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
