A meeting of the Disabled Persons Advisory Board of the Township of Lower Makefield was held in the Municipal Building on Tuesday, October 26, 2004.  Chairman Rogers opened the meeting at 7:40 p.m.

Those present:

COMMITTEE MEMBERS:                        John McConville, member

Lisa Huchler-Smith, Secretary

David Rogers, Chairman

Ann Piccinotti, Vice-Chairman

Liz Harbison, member (absent)

OTHERS:                                                       Scott Fegley, Supervisor Liaison (absent)

Mr. Rogers discussed potential visitors to the meeting tonight.  He stated he was unable to get anyone, the Fire Marshall, the Bensalem DPAB member or Jeff Werner to come to the October or November meeting and he would try for another month.

Mr. Rogers discussed his inability to get construction plans from the Planning Department for the Board to review for ADA compliance.  He said he would talk with Nancy Frick and if he does not make any progress to have plans sent to the Board to review, he would go to the Board of Supervisors for approval.

Mr. Rogers stated he is waiting for Mr. Fedorchak to give him information from the engineers about the cost to alter the light on Big Oak Road to accommodate the blind resident.

Mr. Rogers discussed the lack of accessibility for disabled persons at certain places in the Township such as doctor’s offices and the Township building.  The Board agreed to look for accessibility problems in the Township to address to Mr. Fedorchak and the Board of Supervisors that could easily be corrected.  Mr. Rogers stated he would draft a recommendation and send it to Mr. Fedorchak to correct the deficiencies in the ramp at the entrance to the Township building.

Mr. Rogers said this Board might need to personally visit Township businesses that do not comply with accessibility requirements.  Ms. Huchler-Smith said it would be helpful to have a short list of how to make places of business more accessible.

Ms. Huchler-Smith recommended the Township put money in the budget for Nancy Frick or the person who review plans to attend ADA sponsored seminars or conferences to educate them on ADA requirements so that future plans for public places comply with ADA requirements.

The Board discussed ideas on how to make the community aware of the Disabled Persons Advisory Board and how it can educate and assist people.  The Board agreed a presentation to the Lower Makefield Seniors would be a good place to start.

Ms. Huchler-Smith moved, Mr. McConville seconded and it was unanimously carried to approve the August 2004 meeting minutes as written.

The Committee scheduled the next meeting for Tuesday, November 23rd at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
