Leaf Collection
UPDATED 12/17/2025 - SNOW DELAYS
Lower Makefield leaf collection crews will resume leaf collection once all snow is melted. Below is a list of the zones that have not yet received a second collection; if you live within these areas, please have all leaves ready for collection as soon as possible. We understand in some areas, leaves were piled in the street, and the snowplow pushed these piles onto the grass – please be advised that leaf piles should NOT be raked into the streets. Crews will attempt to clean up these areas as best as possible; any assistance to organize existing piles is appreciated and will aid in the timely collection from our crews before the next winter event.
- Week of December 15th (weather permitting) - Zones 18-26, Areas of Zone 16 - Stapler & Ginko Area, Combine, Harvest, & Silo (between Combine & Disk).
If you are in the above areas, please have you leaves ready immediately.
As a reminder:
• Leaves cannot be collected if there are sticks, twigs, branches, ornamental grasses, lawn clippings or wood mixed in. These materials will damage the collection equipment resulting in further delays. Piles containing these materials WILL NOT be collected.

Bird of the Month - December - Eastern Screech Owl
The Eastern Screech Owl
- Eastern Screech-Owl pairs usually are monogamous and remain together for life. Some males, however, will mate with two different females. The second female may evict the first female, lay her own eggs in the nest, and incubate both clutches.
- The Eastern Screech-Owl is known to eat a variety of songbirds, including the European Starling. Despite this fact, the starling regularly displaces the owl from nesting sites and takes over the hole to raise its own brood.
- Nestling screech-owls fight fiercely among themselves for food, and sometimes even kill their smallest sibling. This behavior, known as siblicide, is not uncommon among birds such as hawks, owls, and herons, and is often a result of poor breeding conditions in a given year.
