Moses Suber
Moses H. Suber
1835-1863
Moses was born in Bucks County around 1835 to William Suber and Ester Palmer. The Suber family originated in Germany but Moses's 2nd great grandfather moved here and lived in Newtown. Moses's first great grandfather Johannes "John" Suber served in the miltary In Middletown PA when he was 54 years old. He is listed as a private in Capt. Willett's battalion. His company was sent to take part in the American offensive against Canada. Capt. Willett's uniformed coat is at the Mercer Museum in Doylestson.
In the 1850 census Moses was working as a carpenter. By the 1860 census he owned a confectionery shop.
He married Ann Vanhona on 12/13/1854 at the Newtown Presbyterian Church/Aubrey Lodge. They had a daughter, Mary E., born October 16, 1857.
Military
Moses first enlisted for a 3-year term in August 1861. He served with the 2nd Company of PA Volunteers. He was injured late August 1862 at the 2nd battle of Bull Run when he was thrown from a horse. It was said his spine was badly injured. He was discharged on 12/4/1862 due to disability as a private. It was said he had rheumatism and Hypertrophy of the heart.
He reenlisted in July of 1863 for 6 months in the 20th Regiment PA cavalry, Company “L” as a 1st. Lieutenant: 7/29/1863.
He died in October of that year in Philadelphia, US Army Officer’s Hospital, Camac’s Woods, of peritonitis, which is a common way for people to die after being shot.
He is one of our few soldiers who died as a result of war injuries.
Anna V. Suber remarried 10/17/1865 to William Goodrich at the Presbyterian Church in Bristol, but she continued to fight for daughter Mary to get Moses’s pension, and it was granted. In 1901, after her second husband died, Anna reapplied for the widow's pension for Moses, and it was granted again. She moved to NY with her husband and that is where daughter Mary lived her life.
